Environmental, Social and Governance

What Is ESG

Our Planet. Our people. Our Responsibility.

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria are a set of standards that exist to guide and evaluate a company’s collective consciousness for environmental, social and governance factors.

By Incorporating and implementing internal ESG guidelines and adhering to international ESG best practices, company’s like ourselves are able to harvest a culture geared towards creating a positive impact in the communities and areas in which we operate.

How we conduct business impacts our people and our environment

ESG Factors Relevant to our Industry

Our ESG approach recognizes that responsible mining extends beyond extraction. Environmental care, social responsibility, and strong governance shape how we operate, manage risk, and engage with communities across every region in which we work.

The sometimes informal nature of certain mining operations across Africa can, at times, lead to mining practices that may be harmful to both people and the environment. As part of our ESG commitment, we will be rolling out the IEG Africa DMCC Zero-Mercury program in several areas identified as high-risk. With our help, the damage to both the environment and the people exposed to these substances can be largely mitigated. Environmentally friendly alternatives have been well studied and with adequate education and training can be implemented in areas where such practices pose a threat to our people and our planet.

Social trends, labor practices and political interference (or lack thereof) can create hurdles when dealing with the health, safety and the well being of communities that have limited infrastructure and resources. When operating within these environments, businesses play a pivotal role in mitigating potential safety risks, the exposure to geopolitical conflicts and/or human rights violations. Negative social impacts have the potential to disrupt and negatively influence a company’s business activities and harm the people that form the backbone of our industry. Our due diligence and screening process ensures that as a business, we only engage with individuals and entities that practice social responsibility in-line with the relevant local and international guidelines. We are passionate about people. Uplifting and empowering the communities with whom we engage is a critical aspect of our vision and mission as a business.

When developing and implementing ESG guidelines, governance is often underestimated relative to climate risk and social implications. Understanding governance risks and opportunities however, is critical in the businesses decision-making process. Poor governance practices pose significant financial, legal and reputational risk. We work closely with the relevant regulatory bodies and stakeholders to ensure our governance guidelines and policies are updated regularly to meet globally accepted best practices. Our ‘Good Governance’ promise to our stakeholders allows us to maximize opportunities and contribute to the growth and sustainability of our industry. We are at the forefront of governance related developments and strategically position ourselves to be apart of the conversation.
